So I've been taking a photography course at San Francisco State. Naturally since this is San Francisco (liberalism = art activism) you'd think the art curriculum would be pretty freaken spiffy.....but not the photography course sadly enough. My teacher is mediocre at best and the rest of the class just does not seem inspired to be taking the photography course. Bit of a bummer if you ask me. But enough of that.
I've recently gotten my hands on some Fujifilm Neopan 400...and I have to say, it is the best film I have used thus far. Maybe I've just had bad luck with Ilford HP5's and Kodak T-max's....but all the same Neopan feels like it just out beats both. Here are some recent stuffs that I have made between January and now....narrowed down.
This was my first go at using the Neopan film. I had just gotten the 12 roll shipment that day (2 bucks a roll! great deal!) and I thought I'd break a roll in. I like the placement of the fire extinguisher pointing at the sleeping fellas head.
I'm also very pleased with the way it handles grain and and contrast. Super awesome DOF here from my canon 50mm prime. Awesome. 1.8 is great.
Now it seems fuzzy here, but thats not because of the film. The scanner I've been using (a Nikon coolscan 4400 or something) seems to have an issue with proper shades and controlled contrast...the negatives, I assure you, are spot on. This is at the Embarcadero in SF. Very cool place to pick up imported goods (food wise).
I showed this to my class on our print eval day and the majority of the people thought it was rather creepy that I took a photo of people and they didn't know it. Apparently they've never grasped what street photography is? I mean we had a look at bresson and doisneau works, and they still think its creepy. Weird people in my class. A girl in my class said she liked it though. thats cool.
Haha right. This was shot before valentines day (like 2 days before). Its always funny watching dudes shop for their women. Mostly because they don't know what the hell they are looking for...like that fella in the back. And the fuzziness again: scanner, not negative.
And Here I had a rash of bad luck with the developing. Its not noticeable but I'll explain. Some bro knocked my camera over. The impact of the camera hitting the ground forced the shutter curtain open and locked it open, exposing the lower part (here the upper) of the negative in a thin, black strip. So what you get is an unexposed print at the top, but everything else was alright. What a load of crap. But I saved it via PS pretty well.
Smoking is a terrible habit but it makes for an interesting photo. This was from the same roll that got exposed. The wash out ghosts at the bottom is from bad developer.
haha kids.
Thankfully it wasn't a hot day and the car wasn't positioned directly in the sun. Even then, the dog still doesn't look too jolly.
This is a portrait of my dad. Its a bit grainy because during the developing process, the water bath I put it in suddenly turned super hot, causing the grains to be more readily apparent. This is still a fantastic portrait of my dad anyway.
I got my hands on a 28mm prime wide angle for the canon and I have to say, It's pretty darn good. Shot from above.
These guys wouldn't let me in. I really wanted to go in and make photos. So I stood on the parking complex and made a photo of the outside. There's a person there....
This is the parking complex. I like these symmetric structures. Its has alot to say, I think.
Annnd thats it I think. Yea hope you guys enjoyed it!
